Aussie 'Jonah Lomu' on Wallabies radar

Australia coach Michael Cheika is interested in testing 'Australia's Jonah Lomu' Taqele Naiyaravoro with the Wallabies.

Waratahs winger Taqele Naiyaravoro's breakthrough season could end with a call-up to Australia's Rugby World Cup, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has revealed.

Speaking to Rugby HQ on Fox Sports on Thursday, Cheika - who is also the Waratahs' coach - explained that Naiyaravoro's unique "profile" makes him hard to ignore.

The 195-centimetre tall winger, who has been described as 'the Australian Jonah Lomu', is the Waratahs' equal-leading try scorer in the 2015 Super Rugby season with four.

It is only Naiyaravoro's second season in professional rugby with the Fiji-born giant having previously played rugby league with the reserve team of NRL club Wests Tigers.

Cheika confirmed, however, that the 23-year-old is in contention for the Wallabies' World Cup squad.

"I think you'd have to say he's right up there, he's a profile that we don't have, that big type of winger so he's right up there challenging with the other wingers that have been performing and have performed for Australia already, in last season's spring tour," the 48-year-old coach said.

"It would be naive of me not to have a look at him but the last five round games and then finals will see if he can go up to the standard."

But Cheika has warned Naiyaravoro that he will become a marked man the longer his good form continues.

"He's still got a lot to learn in rugby at the top level and the requirements both in attack and in defence but when he's got the ball in his hands, with a bit of room to move, he's a pretty devastating player," he said.

"But like anyone too, he's going to get marked heavier and teams are going to go after him so it's how he grows through that as well [that will decide whether he is up to Test rugby]."
